Weekly Address: Averting a Government Shutdown and Expanding Access to Affordable Healthcare
In this week’s address, President Obama says that on October 1st, a big part of the Affordable Care Act will go live and give uninsured Americans the chance to buy the same quality, affordable health care as everyone else. It is also the day when some Republicans in Congress might shut down the government just because they don’t like the law. The President urged Congress to both pass a budget by Monday and raise the nation’s debt ceiling so that we can keep growing the economy. He also said that those without health insurance and those who buy it on the individual market should visit HealthCare.gov to find out how to get covered on Tuesday.

Talking Healthcare: While in New York on Tuesday, President Obama joined former President Bill Clinton at the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting to discuss health care reform in America. “What we’re saying to people is, look, just go to the website yourself,” the President said. “Go to healthcare.gov; take a look at whether this is a good deal or not and make your own decision about whether this is good for you.” Check out their conversation here.
On Thursday, the President spoke at Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Maryland about why access to affordable health care is a cornerstone of middle-class security, and why he took on the work of fixing our broken health care system during his first term.
In the wealthiest nation on Earth, no one should go broke just because they get sick. In the United States of America, health care is not a privilege for the fortunate few -- it is a right. And I knew that if we didn’t do something about our unfair and inefficient health care system, it would keep driving up our deficits, it would keep burdening our businesses, it would keep hurting our families, and it would keep holding back economic growth.
Starting October 1, those without health insurance will be able to visit the Health Insurance Marketplace and find health coverage that fits their needs – and their budget. A new report released on Wednesday found that Marketplace premiums are lower than initially expected. This means you can get high-quality, affordable health care under the Affordable Care Act for less than your cell phone bill.
Make sure to watch the latest White House White Board to learn what the Affordable Care Act means for you.
United Nations General Assembly: On Monday and Tuesday, President Obama took part in the 68th session of the U.N. General Assembly. During his time there, the President held an event on supporting civil society, engaged in discussions with world leaders, and spoke in front of the General Assembly.
When he addressed the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, President Obama focused on Syria and the use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime, the prospects for diplomatic engagement with Iran, and potential for peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians. "For decades, the United Nations has in fact made a difference -- from helping to eradicate disease, to educating children, to brokering peace," the President said.
But like every generation of leaders, we face new and profound challenges, and this body continues to be tested. The question is whether we possess the wisdom and the courage, as nation-states and members of an international community, to squarely meet those challenges; whether the United Nations can meet the tests of our time.
Read his full remarks here.
President's Statement from the Briefing Room: President Obama spoke from the White House Briefing Room on Friday about new diplomatic efforts with the Islamic Republic of Iran and the situation with Congress. Earlier that day, President Obama spoke with President Rouhani of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which is the first communication between an American and Iranian President since 1979. Turning to Congress, the President stated the urgency of raising the debt ceiling and voting on a budget. "My message to Congress is this: Do not shut down the government. Do not shut down the economy. Pass a budget on time. Pay our bills on time. Refocus on the everyday concerns of the American people," the President said.
Memorial Service for Victims of the Navy Yard Shooting: President Obama spoke at a memorial service on Sunday to honor the 12 victims of the Navy Yard shooting. “We know that no words we offer today are equal to the magnitude, to the depths of that loss,” the President told the families of the victims.
The President also spoke about the need to prevent future tragedies like this one. “I do not accept that we cannot find a common-sense way to preserve our traditions, including our basic Second Amendment freedoms and the rights of law-abiding gun owners, while at the same time reducing the gun violence that unleashes so much mayhem on a regular basis,” he said.
Vice President Biden Travels to Colorado: On Monday, Vice President Joe Biden traveled to Colorado to view the damage from recent flooding and survey the recovery efforts.
“When President Obama issued the disaster declaration for the state, as you all know, that provided additional assistance -- everything from cleaning up debris to helping people with their housing costs to boots on the ground that are providing technical assistance and helping the search and rescue,” the Vice President said.
Vice President Biden called the progress “remarkable” but said recovery efforts will continue as long as the people of Colorado need help rebuilding. |

Subject: What I told Speaker Boehner the other night...
Reinhold --
One Republican senator said that trying to shut down the government to sabotage Obamacare is "the dumbest idea I've ever heard."
I agree.
But that's the strategy of some far-right Republicans in Congress. They know they risk creating another economic crisis if Congress doesn't pass a budget in the next four days. That hasn't stopped them from pushing us closer to the brink, obsessing over a proposal they know will never pass.
I called House Speaker John Boehner the other night to tell him that Americans like you have worked too long and too hard to dig our nation out of the financial crisis, and the last thing we need is for Washington to manufacture another.
I want to make sure that message gets through. Add your voice -- remind Speaker Boehner that Congress has a job to do.
Every minute of every day, I'm focused on building a strong, secure middle class.
Right now, few things are more important than keeping our economy growing from the middle out -- giving more Americans a chance at success.
Washington is full of powerful interests trying to stand in the way. They're focused on making the right political moves, not on what's best for you.
It's a part of Washington that is truly broken.
We won't fix it overnight, but folks like you at OFA have the power to change politics as usual -- all because you've believed from the start that, together, our voices can be powerful enough to make real change.
The current standoff in Congress is no match for that.
Over the next few days, OFA will be asking a lot of you because there's a lot at stake -- I hope you'll take this moment to get more involved and inspire your friends and neighbors to speak out. Remind Congress who sent them there in the first place.
Start today by telling Speaker Boehner that Congress must come together to pass a budget:

Thanks,
Barack |

Subject: Reinhold, it's me
Reinhold --
You can't just want change.
You've got to fight for it, too. Barack and I hear that's exactly what you're doing -- thank you.
This work matters. Just look at the August congressional recess: For the first time in a long time, our side built some real momentum over the summer -- on everything from immigration reform to climate change. That's all you.
You're the heart and soul of this organization. That's why OFA wants to hear directly from you.
If you haven't had a chance yet, Reinhold, weigh in: What is the number one issue that drives you to keep fighting?
http://my.barackobama.com/Just-One-Question
I had the privilege of helping get Organizing for Action off the ground earlier this year, and I'm excited about where you're taking it.
There's a lot of work still ahead. As Barack says: Winning an election doesn't bring about the change we seek. It simply gives us the chance to make that change.
You're embracing that opportunity -- and all Americans will be better off for it.
Thanks,
Michelle |

Honoring the Victims of the Navy Yard Shooting
President Obama spoke yesterday at a memorial service to honor the victims of the Navy Yard shooting, and to thank first responders for their work.
"We know that no words we offer today are equal to the magnitude, to the depths of that loss," the President told the families of the victims. "But we come together as a grateful nation to honor your loved ones, to grieve with you, and to offer, as best we can, some solace and comfort."

In his weekly address, President Obama says the economy is making progress five years after the worst recession since the Great Depression, but to avoid another crisis, Congress must meet two deadlines in the coming weeks: pass a budget by the end of the month to keep the government open, and raise the debt ceiling so America can pay its bills.

Subject: WirtschaftsWoche Agenda vom 23.09.2013: Was die neue Regierung anpacken muss
|
|
|
|
|
|
|

Weekly Address: Congress Must Act Now to Pass a Budget and Raise the Debt Ceiling
Congress should vote to do these now, so that we can keep creating new jobs and expanding opportunity for the middle class.

Five-Year Anniversary of the Financial Crisis: This week marked the fifth anniversary of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. “We've cleared away the rubble from the financial crisis and we've begun to lay a new foundation for economic growth and prosperity,” the President said. During his remarks on Monday, President Obama stressed the importance of growing the economy faster, creating better jobs, increasing wages and incomes, and expanding opportunity.
And as long as I’ve got the privilege of serving as your President, I will spend every moment of every day I have left fighting to restore security and opportunity for the middle class, and to give everyone who works hard a chance to get ahead.
On this anniversary, senior staff across the Obama administration sat down and talked about the behind-the-scenes decision-making process and the challenges we’ve overcome as a nation to rebuild the economy. Make sure to check out the audio stories here.
President’s Remarks on Washington Navy Yard: On Monday, President Obama gave a brief statement about the tragic events that happened at the Washington Navy Yard. “We send our thoughts and prayers to all at the Navy Yard who’ve been touched by this tragedy,” the President said. “We’re going to be investigating thoroughly what happened, as we do so many of these shootings, sadly, that have happened, and do everything that we can to try to prevent them.” The President ordered U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff until September 20th.
President Meets with Business Roundtable: On Wednesday, President Obama spoke with members of the Business Roundable, a group of CEOs from some of the country’s leading companies. “I’m hugely invested in your success because this room represents not only an enormous amount of economic output, but also represents the hopes and dreams of people who are working very hard trying to make a living,” President Obama said. “When you succeed, when you’re doing well, when you’re competitive at a global scale, then America can do well also.” Read his remarks here.
Meeting with Export Council: The President met with his Export Council on Thursday. This committee of government and private-sector leaders advises the President on trade and export related issues.
But I tell you, one of the biggest bright spots in our economy has been exports. The fact that "Made in America" means something and has provided a boost to our domestic economy, and has reminded the world just how competitive we are.
Read his full remarks here.
America’s Uninsured: On Tuesday, the Census Bureau released data which found the share of Americans without health insurance declined between 2011 and 2012. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) estimated that nearly 6 out of 10 uninsured Americans - more than 30 million people - could have access to high value health insurance for under $100 per person per month starting in 2014.
As well, new data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) show that there has been a dramatic slowdown in healthcare costs.
First Lady Speaks to Food Marketers: First Lady Michelle Obama addressed leaders from the food and media industry on Wednesday about the power of marketing in influencing kid’s food choices. She spoke on the importance of collaboration to shift the marketing of unhealthy products to healthier products. “I am not asking anyone to take the fun out of childhood. As we all know, treats are one of the best parts of being a kid,” the First Lady said. “Instead, the goal here is to empower parents instead of undermining them as they try to make healthier choices for their families. Read her full remarks here.
Citizenship Day and Constitution Week: This week was Constitution Week, where we celebrated the enduring strength of our Constitution. On Tuesday, we recognized National Constitution and Citizenship Day, a day to reaffirm that we are a proud nation of immigrants. Across the United States this week, more than 180 naturalization ceremonies took place. |

Subject: BICCtalk „Cyber-Physical Systems“ am 30. September 2013 mit Siemens, Obeo Paris, actiworks
Sehr geehrter Herr Professor Kiehl,
|
Thomas Hahn, Siemens AG
Nach seinem Studium der Informatik in Erlangen begann Thomas Hahn seine Karriere in der Produkt-Entwicklung Industrielle Netzwerke bei Siemens Erlangen. Als Leiter für Software-Produkt-Entwicklung Industrial Automation Systems wechselte er zu Siemens Nürnberg. Seit zwei Jahren ist er der Leiter für Business Analytics and Monitoring und Chief Expert Software bei Siemens Corporate Technologies.
Sein Thema bei uns: Future of manufacturing – View on enabling technologies
|
|
Etienne Juliot, Obeo Paris
Etienne Juliot is co-funder and vice president of Obeo, a company focused on Model Driven tools. He has over 12 years of experience as architect of information systems and embedded systems. Juliot is strongly involved in OpenSource communities: as director of the Eclipse Foundation, member of the steering committee of Polarsys, engagement in several Eclipse projects (Acceleo, ATL, GMF, Mylyn, SOA) and as vice-president of Alliance Libre.
His topic at the BICCtalk: Open Tools for System Engineering and Embedded Systems |
|
Konrad Peters, actiworks

Right now, Congress’ top priorities should be growing the economy and creating good middle class jobs so we build on the progress we’ve made over the last four years. OTTI unterstützt den
1. REGENSBURGER ENERGIEKONGRESS - FOKUS: STROMNETZ
Wann: am 24./25. September 2013 an der Hochschule Regensburg
Veranstalter: School of Energy and Resources der Hochschule Regensburg und IHK Regensburg

The Progress We've Made
In the early hours of September 15, 2008 Lehman Brothers announced it would file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and it sent shock waves through the global economy -- ultimately shrinking the economy by more than 10% and costing us more than 800,000 jobs a month with devastating implications for families and businesses.
In the five years since, we've made incredible progress as a country. And so while there's still more work to be done, we've asked senior staff from across the Obama administration to sit down and talk about the moments when key decisions were made -- the factors they weighed, and the results of the actions that President Obama took.
Check out a behind-the-scenes look of the decision-making process that you won't find anywhere else.

President Obama Speaks on the Shooting at the Washington, DC Navy Yard
Today, before delivering remarks on the economy, President Obama gave a brief statement about the tragic events at the Washington Navy Yard:
I’ve been briefed by my team on the situation. We still don’t know all the facts, but we do know that several people have been shot, and some have been killed. So we are confronting yet another mass shooting -- and today, it happened on a military installation in our nation’s capital.
It’s a shooting that targeted our military and civilian personnel. These are men and women who were going to work, doing their job, protecting all of us. They’re patriots, and they know the dangers of serving abroad -- but today, they faced unimaginable violence that they wouldn't have expected here at home.
So we offer our gratitude to the Navy and local law enforcement, federal authorities, and the doctors who’ve responded with skill and bravery. I’ve made it clear to my team that I want the investigation to be seamless, so that federal and local authorities are working together. And as this investigation moves forward, we will do everything in our power to make sure whoever carried out this cowardly act is held responsible.
In the meantime, we send our thoughts and prayers to all at the Navy Yard who’ve been touched by this tragedy. We thank them for their service. We stand with the families of those who’ve been harmed. They’re going to need our love and support. And as we learn more about the courageous Americans who died today -- their lives, their families, their patriotism -- we will honor their service to the nation they helped to make great. And obviously, we're going to be investigating thoroughly what happened, as we do so many of these shootings, sadly, that have happened, and do everything that we can to try to prevent them.

The Five-Year Anniversary of the Financial Crisis: A Look Back at the Progress We’ve Made
Five years ago this week, a financial crisis unlike any in generations rocked Wall Street -- turning a recession that was already hammering Main Street into the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.
Upon taking office, the President acted with unprecedented speed to respond to the crisis and its impact on American families -- taking actions to stabilize the financial system, rescue the auto industry, and boost the economy by providing tax relief to working families and keeping teachers and first responders on the job. On the five-year anniversary of the crisis, the Administration has prepared a report that describes 15 key elements of the response to the financial crisis and where we find ourselves today.
Read the full report here.
