Town Hall x Three: This week, President Obama traveled the country to hold a series of town hall meetings. In Virginia, he stopped by Northern Virginia Community College to talk about the importance of education in a 21st century economy. Then it was on to California, and Facebook headquarters, where he answered questions about fiscal responsibility. On the way back to Washington, the President stopped in Reno, Nevada, to meet with workers who are manufacturing tomorrow's clean energy technologies today.

Celebrating Earth Day: To celebrate Earth Day, Nancy Sutley and Heather Zichal, two of the President's top energy and environment advisers, hosted a live chat on the South Lawn of the White House. Energy.gov launched a special Earth Day page, and the EPA shared stories and video of activities around the country.

A New App for Vets: Teams at VA’s National Center for PTSD and DoD’s National Center for Telehealth and Technology have collaborated to create a mobile app to educate about PTSD, information about professional care, a self-assessment for PTSD, opportunities to find support, and tools that can help with managing the stresses of daily life with PTSD.

Advise the Advisor with Secretary Chu: Secretary Chu addresses your questions from Advise the Adivsor specifically on reducing the amount of oil we import by a third in a little over a decade, along with the need to both increase our domestic energy production and reduce energy waste.

Your Turn: As part of the Race to the Top Commencement Challenge, public high schools around the country submitted an application earlier this year that describe how their school is preparing students for college and a career. We’ve narrowed down the schools to six finalists and now it’s your turn to weigh in.

Welcome to the Council on Women and Girls Weekly Highlights! This week, The President engaged in a dialogue with people from across the country during his Facebook Town Hall, which focused on issues like the deficit, Medicare, and clean energy. In addition, First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden’s Joining Forces Initiative continued to highlight the sacrifices that military families make on a daily basis, and how we can provide them with support.

Highlights

The President’s Facebook Town Hall: Budgets, Values, Engagement
During his Facebook Town Hall on Wednesday, The President discussed the importance of engaging in a dialogue about our Nation’s fiscal future. We noted how the questions he got from the crowd mirrored almost perfectly the issues that are being debated right now in Washington, like education, clean energy, the deficits and Medicare, and that the philosophical differences guiding the debate will have profound implications for the lives of virtually every American.

The President at Easter Breakfast: “Our Thoughts and Prayers are With All the Families” in North Carolina
At his Easter Prayer Breakfast this week in the East Room with Christian leaders from across the country, the President kept his remarks brief but still made a point to note the tough times in one area of the country right now: “as some of you know, obviously, North Carolina was ravaged by storms this past weekend, and our thoughts and prayers are with all the families who have been affected down there.”

Giving Back to our Military Families
In homes across the country, working families are cutting back and learning how to do more with less. Military families are facing these same issues on top of unique challenges. When our troops are called to action, their families must juggle countless responsibilities at home, including the stress of multiple deployments, and frequent moves. Working Together to Create a 21st Century Immigration System
President Obama remains deeply committed to reforming our immigration laws to meet our 21st Century economic and security needs. On Wednesday the President had an important meeting with a broad group of business, law enforcement, faith, and elected leaders from across the country to discuss how immigration reform needs to be a priority for everyone, and got their feedback on how to get the job done.

Attorney General Holder Announces Formation of Oil and Gas Price Fraud Working Group to Focus on Energy Markets
Attorney General Eric Holder today announced the formation of a Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force Working Group to focus specifically on fraud in the energy markets. The Oil and Gas Price Fraud Working Group will monitor oil and gas markets for potential violations of criminal or civil laws to safeguard against unlawful consumer harm.

Winning the Future for Our Communities, Investing in Our Earth for Their Future
This week, people all around the globe will come together to honor and appreciate our environment. Since its establishment over 40 years ago, Earth Day in America has given us the opportunity to renew our commitment to protecting and preserving the natural treasures and resources vital to our health and prosperity.

On Monday, the President and Mrs. Obama hosted a small impromptu Seder in honor of Passover. For most Jewish families, the Passover meal is full of traditions passed down through the generations, traditions which allow families to reflect on the struggles of previous generations, while also celebrating the triumph of hope and perseverance over injustice and oppression.

Champions of Change: Winning the Race to Educate Our Kids
Last week, as part of the Champions of Change series that highlights people making a difference, parents who are impacting their communities through their involvement in education came to a roundtable at the White House. During the roundtable they shared their experiences and ideas on strengthening our schools.

This week, President Obama held town halls in Northern Virginia, California, and Nevada, to speak directly to the American people about his vision for reducing our debt and bringing down our deficit based on the values of shared responsibility and shared prosperity.
