Weekly Address: Coming Together to Remember September 11th

President Obama marks the eleventh anniversary of the September 11th attacks by remembering the innocent lives lost, and honoring the first responders and men and women in uniform who have served and sacrificed to keep our country safe.

In the difficult years following the attacks, the United States has come back stronger as a nation, decimated the leadership of al-Qaeda, ensured that Osama bin Laden will never attack America again, and strengthened our alliances across the world.

The President has signed a proclamation making Friday, September 7 through Sunday, September 9, 2012 National Days of Prayer and Remembrance.

To join that commemoration, you can sign up for a service opportunity near you at Serve.gov.

Watch President Obama's weekly address.

Weekly Address

Weekly Wrap Up

President Obama Speaks to Troops at Fort Bliss: Last Friday, two years after his visit to Fort Bliss that marked the end of the combat mission in Iraq, President Obama returned to speak to the troops.

"Now, when I was here last, I made you a pledge. I said that, as President, I will insist that America serves you and your families as well as you've served us," he said. "And there again, I meant what I said. Because part of ending wars responsibly is caring for those who fought in it. That’s why I wanted to come back to Bliss on this anniversary to reaffirm our solemn obligations to you and your families. You see, we may be turning a page on a decade of war, but America's responsibilities to you have only just begun."

Watch the video of President Obama speaking to troops at Fort Bliss, and read more about his visit.

President Obama Meets with Victims of Hurricane Isaac: On Monday, President Obama visited St. John’s Parish in Louisiana to understand the damage from Hurricane Isaac and meet with officials responding to the disaster. The President highlighted the “extraordinary work” done by local first responders who worked around the clock to rescue residents stranded by high water in a place that hadn't flooded in 17 years.

"Some of the folks that we just walked by literally had to be saved by boat. They were in their homes, trapped. The waters came in so quickly," he said. "But because of the great work of law enforcement, National Guard, Coast Guard, making sure that folks were out in rescue mode rapidly, even in some cases at risk of their own lives, no lives were lost."

White House Beer Recipe: Over the weekend, Chef Sam Kass released the much anticipated White House beer recipes. After a lot of online buzz and a popular petition on We the People, the White House’s online petition platform, the White House decided to give America the White House Honey Ale and the White House Honey Porter recipes. Check out the behind the scenes of the home-brewing process.

White House Mobile App: On Tuesday, we announced some big changes to the way you connect with the White House. With the growing reliance on tablets and smart phones as well as demand for mobile access, we’ve relaunched the entire White House mobile program, making it even easier to see what's going on at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

First, we revamped the mobile version of WhiteHouse.gov, giving it a new look and making more than 99% of the site available to mobile users. We've also released new versions of the White House apps for the iPhone and Android, rebuilding them from the ground up and adding several new features. For the first time, these apps are also fully compatible with the iPad and Android tablets.

Read more about the White Houses’ revamped mobile program and watch a video about the White House app.

Inside the White House: Also this week, White House curator William Allman hosted Office Hours on Twitter, answering questions about the art and history of the White House. During the chat, he discussed who manages the art, the oldest piece in the building, the Obama family’s favorite, and more. Check out the full Q&A and take a tour of the White House yourself through the Google Art project.

3 Million Signatures Later: Recently, We the People crossed the 3 million signature threshold. The White House launched We the People last year, offering a powerful and simple way to petition the Obama Administration to take action on a range of issues. If a petition gathers enough signatures, policy officials review it and publish an official response. Many times, petitions posted on We the People have a real impact on policy-making. To learn more, check out a couple key facts and figures about the We the People platform, and view a map of petition signatures by location.

New School Meals! The First Lady Welcomes Kids Back to School

Marissa Duswalt

Watch a Back to School Message from First Lady Michelle Obama about the improvements to school meals this year.

What's new with school meals this year?

The school day just got healthier! This year, the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act will be implemented in schools across the country to improve the meals that 32 million children eat each day. This is groundbreaking legislation signed by the President on December 13, 2010, to improve the food we serve to our kids in school. This legislation provides assurance to parents that our kids are getting the same kind of balance and nutrition that they get at home. Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 is a great win for our nation’s kids – and their parents.

Thanks to new school breakfast and lunch meal standards, schools meals now do a better job of giving children the healthy food they need. The new school meals have:

What should parents to know about as their kids start school?

Encourage your child to check out these new meals and find their favorites. Kids may consume up to half their calories in schools, so we must work together to make the school day healthier with nutritious food, more physical activity, and nutrition education. It’s so important that we support the new school meals for our kids. Well-nourished kids are ready to learn and do better in class. When we give kids plenty of healthy food choices and regular physical activity at school, they learn healthier habits for life.

You can get involved at your school to keep the good work going, too. To encourage healthy eating and exercise outside of the cafeteria, parents can get their kids’ school involved in the Healthier US Schools program, which gives special recognition to schools that are changing whole school environments to support healthy choices, teaching kids about nutrition, and giving them opportunities to get active during the school day.

Tips for parents to get the school year off to a healthy start:

We the People: 3 Million Signatures Later

Last year, the White House launched a new tool called We the People, offering a powerful and simple way to petition the Obama Administration to take action on a range of issues. If a petition gathers enough signatures, policy officials review it and publish an official response.

From the beginning, We the People's popularity exceeded our expectations. More than 600,000 signatures were received in the first 11 days and within two weeks, 81 petitions had reached the initial signature threshold of 5,000 signatures within 30 days. Raising the threshold to 25,0000 signatures within 30 days allowed us to balance our resources and focus on providing quality response and follow-up engagement. Even still, since October 3, 2011, we've had an additional 30 petitions cross the new threshold.

Check out key facts and figures about the We the People platform.

Marissa Duswalt

On August 31, 2012, the President signed a proclamation regarding National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, September 2012. In the proclamation, he urges Americans to promote healthy living for our children:

"Each of us can play a role in ensuring our children have the opportunity to live long, healthy lives, and by joining together in pursuit of that mission, I am confident we can build a brighter future for America's youth."

Description: Unknown ObjectJoin the movement to raise a healthier generation of kids! There are opportunities for all of us -- parents and caregivers, elected officials from all levels of government, schools, health care professionals, faith-based and community-based organizations, and private sector companies -- to play a role in ensuring a healthy future for our children.

Sonder-Newsletter vom 5. September 2012
Liebe Newsletter-Freunde,

Subject: Antimicrobial Research - Abstract submission (Lisbon, Portugal, November 2012)
If you are having trouble reading this email, read the online version
ICAR2012 Conference

Dear colleague,

You are still in time to submit abstracts for presentation at The II International Conference on Antimicrobial Research - ICAR 2012, which will be held from 21st to 23rd November 2012 in Lisbon (Portugal).
http://www.formatex.info/icar2012

- 10th September 2012: Deadline for abstract submission (for short talks)
- 4th October 2012: Deadline for abstract submission (for poster or virtual presentations)
- 24th October 2012: Deadline for late registration
ICAR2012 is the natural continuation of the new series of conferences on antimicrobial research, whose first edition, held in Valladolid (Spain) in 2010, gathered more than 500 researchers from nearly 60 countries. It aims at establishing as a key forum in Europe for the presentation, exchange and dissemination of information and experiences on anti-microbe strategies. "Anti" is here taken in the broadest sense as "against cell cyc., adhesion, or communication", when harmful for the human health, industry or economy (infectious diseases, chemotherapy, food, biomedicine, agriculture, livestock, biotechnology, water systems...). It will also cover topics on antimicrobial resistance, (early) microbial and resistance detection, enhancement of innate defenses against pathogens, as well as methods and techniques.

Although ICAR is primarily a research-focused scientific event, it is obvious that every research effort aims at contributing to a better clinical practice ultimately, and therefore, everybody would benefit from a good mix of research- and clinical-oriented attendees at the conference. Thus, in order to encourage the participation of health-care professionals, the ICAR program will feature dedicated sessions with those works which are better described as "clinical work" rather than "research work".

Gründerbarometer
Newsletter #21 vom 4. September 2012 // Richtig gruenden
Liebe Newsletter-Freunde,

In eigener Sache

Ergobag: Auf Wachstum getrimmt
Das Kölner Startup will seinen Umsatz verdoppeln.
Qmilch: Investoren in Sicht
