|

Hey guys --
Because of you, Washington accomplished something big.
After rates on new student loans doubled on July 1st, a group of lawmakers on both sides of the aisle came together to help solve the problem. The compromise keeps rates low for students, guaranteeing that borrowers can lock in low rates currently available, and capping rate increases in the future.
Last Friday, President Obama signed that bill into law.
And we have you to thank for it. It happened because you raised your voices, and Washington saw how much you cared about this issue.
Now, the typical undergraduate will save about $1,500 on new loans this year. And that's incredibly important for the sophomore waiting tables to pay tuition, or the senior working in her college library to help make ends meet.
So when President Obama signed the bill last week, there were students on hand to talk about what this meant for them. It's a powerful thing to watch.
Check out this video of students telling their stories, then share it so that others know how important this issue is, too.
This was your victory. You took to Facebook and Twitter, you told your friends, and you made your voice so loud and clear that you couldn't be ignored. You got it done.
But even with this success, we need to make sure more Americans have access to higher education -- that young Americans are preparing for the kinds of jobs we need in a 21st century economy, and aren't saddled with mountains of debt while they do it.
A college education is so critical for success -- a lesson I learned from my parents, who worked hard every day to make sure I had the opportunity to excel. It's a lesson that rang true for me as ever when I watched these young students tell their stories.
I hope you'll take a minute to watch, too:

Thanks!

P.S. -- Next week, President Obama will be speaking about how we can keep college costs down and ensure increased access to higher education. Stay tuned for more.

Subject: OFA volunteers made the front pages
|
Reinhold --
One of my favorite parts of days of action is getting to see all the news stories and clips that highlight the work OFA volunteers are doing around the country.
It's a great reminder that our work is making a splash and driving the conversation nationwide -- plus, it's fantastic to see hard-working volunteers get featured.
Just take a look at some of the stories from Tuesday's climate change Day of Action:
The Herald-Times put OFA Indiana volunteers on the front page -- along with a great shot of Rep. Todd Young accepting his award. He looks like he might have mixed feelings about it:
In The Tampa Tribune, OFA Florida supporters made the news for calling out Senator Marco Rubio on his refusal to accept that climate change is real, manmade, and dangerous:
The Times Leader wrote up OFA Pennsylvania's trophy delivery to Rep. Lou Barletta, describing the trophy elegantly as, "A silver unicorn, front legs kicking":
Rep. Walter Jones took some heat from WITN and OFA North Carolina supporters, who said they hope he'll return the award when he comes around to accepting the science behind climate change:
And OFA Colorado supporters got the attention of local CBS affiliate KREX when they called out Rep. Scott Tipton as a climate change denier:
Those are just some of the hundreds of great press stories from around the country, all starring OFA supporters like you and the great work you're doing on the ground.
Make sure your friends and family see how OFA is driving the conversation -- and let them know that they can be in the papers, too. Forward this email today and ask them to join us:

A Birthday Celebration: President Obama celebrated his 52nd birthday on Sunday – and we posted 52 of our favorite pictures from the year!
Live from Phoenix: The President left Washington on Tuesday and headed to Phoenix, Arizona, one of the cities hit the hardest when the housing bubble burst in 2009. Speaking from Desert Vista High School, President Obama discussed the progress we’ve made as a country and his commitment to continue helping responsible homeowners and promote the American Dream of homeownership.
“We’ll make owning a home a symbol of responsibility, not speculation -- a source of security for generations to come, just like it was for my grandparents. I want it to be just like that for all the young people who are here today and their children and their grandchildren.”
The Tonight Show with Jay Leno: While on the West Coast, President Obama stopped by The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and discussed housing and the economy. The President spoke about the progress we’ve made in the last five years and urged leaders in Washington to work hard to help the Americans who are still being affected by the recession.
“What Washington should be thinking about every single day is how do we make sure we’ve got an economy where if folks work hard, they can find a good job that pays a decent wage; they can send their kids to college; they've got health care they can count on; they can retire even if they don't get rich -- or even if they're not rich; and that we’re creating these ladders of opportunities for people to get into the middle class.”
#AskObamaHousing: On Wednesday, President Obama partnered with Zillow, the online real estate market place, and Yahoo!, to answer questions submitted through Twitter, Facebook, Vine and Instagram about the housing market.
“We’ve got to give more hardworking Americans the chance to buy their first home. We have to help more responsible homeowners refinance their mortgages,” President Obama said. “And we’ve got to turn the page on this kind of bubble-and-bust mentality that helped to create this mess in the first place.”
Camp Pendleton: President Obama visited Camp Pendleton to thank the troops and their families. He expressed gratitude for their sacrifices, saying,
“After our nation was attacked, you were some of the very first conventional forces in Afghanistan -— racing in, hundreds of miles by helicopter, toppling that regime and driving al Qaeda from its camps. Then when the fight shifted to Iraq, you were there -— racing toward Baghdad and deposing a dictator. And through years of combat -— in Tikrit, Fallujah and Ramadi -— your courage added to the glories of the Marines’ long and illustrious history.”
"We the Geeks”: Robots and American inventors signed online on Friday for a “We the Geeks” Google+ Hangout on “Robots.” During the Hangout, the participants discussed how robots could assist with manufacturing and job creation – boosting the American economy.
A Better Bargain for Students: President Obama signed the bipartisan student loan interest rate compromise into law on Friday, saving a typical undergraduate student $1,500. The law reiterates the President’s commitment to making higher education more affordable – decreasing interest rates for nearly 11 million borrowers on loans made after July 1, 2013.
Holding a Press Conference: The White House Press Corps gathered in the East Room today for a press conference held by President Obama. During the press conference, the President discussed his plans to give the American people greater confidence in the safeguards surrounding intelligence gathering programs. |

Here's what you need to know
President Obama took Wednesday morning to answer your questions on housing during an online interview, and it's worth a watch. It's part of his push for a more secure foundation for middle-class homeownership.
We want to make sure you've got the facts about President Obama's plan, and the resources that are already available for homeowners.
Here's what you need to know: The President's plan involves simple, commonsense steps that folks on both sides of the aisle agree on. That means making it easier for families to refinance, reforming the system so families aren't on the hook for the bad behavior of certain mortgage lenders, and helping folks who aren't homeowners yet get affordable housing that's right for them.
Click here to find out more about President Obama's plan.
And while we need to do more, there are some resources we've already helped make available:
- MakingHomeAffordable.gov is there to help get you mortgage relief and avoid foreclosure. If you or someone you know needs assistance, they can help you find programs that can help -- both online and through a free, 24/7 support line that can connect you with housing experts.
Take a minute to forward this email to your family and friends, so that people who might not know about these resources can start getting help if they need it.

Subject: Big News: CDC Report Shows Declining Childhood Obesity Rates
|
|
|
|
August 8, 2013
In case you missed it, Tuesday the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a new Vital Signs report showing obesity rates among low-income preschoolers declined in 19 U.S. states and territories between 2008 and 2011. Forty states, the District of Columbia, and two U.S. territories (U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico) were included in the study, and of those, twenty reported obesity rates that held steady and 19 saw declines.
This is huge!
We are thankful for the work so many organizations – and so many people like you – have done to get here. This news clearly shows that we are on the right track. Now it is more important than ever that we double down on our efforts so that we continue to make progress on ensuring all our kids are leading healthy, happy lives.
First Lady Michelle Obama offered her feelings on the news, saying,
“Today’s announcement reaffirms my belief that together, we are making a real difference in helping kids across the country get a healthier start to life. We know how essential it is to set our youngest children on a path towards a lifetime of healthy eating and physical activity, and the more than 10,000 childcare programs participating in the Let’s Move! Child Care initiative are doing vitally important work on this front. Yet, while this announcement reflects important progress, we also know that there is tremendous work still to be done to support healthy futures for all our children.”
Check out Let’s Move! Childcare and the CDC website for tips and strategies on what you can do to help continue reversing the trend.
We look forward to continuing our efforts and continuing to make progress!
