President Obama's Decision on Syria
Just now, President Obama laid out the case for a targeted military action against Syrian regime targets as a result of their use of chemical weapons that killed over one thousand people -- including hundreds of children. The President also made clear that this would not be an open-ended intervention, and there will be with no American troops on the ground.
While the President was clear on the need for action, he announced he would seek Congressional authorization for the use of force.
Watch the President’s statement now in his own words:

50th Anniversary of the March on Washington: On Wednesday, President Obama spoke from the Lincoln Memorial at the “Let Freedom Ring” Ceremony, which commemorated the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. President Obama was joined by former Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, along with members of the King family, civil rights leaders, and other dignitaries. Thousands converged from across the country to join in this historic event. In his remarks, President Obama honored the heroes that marched in 1963, but stressed that while the nation has come far in the past fifty years, there is still work to be done.
But we would dishonor those heroes as well to suggest that the work of this nation is somehow complete. The arc of the moral universe may bend towards justice, but it doesn’t bend on its own. To secure the gains this country has made requires constant vigilance, not complacency.
In recognition of the historic March on Washington, Administration officials wrote blog posts reflecting on what the civil rights movement meant for the country, the urgency of continuing that march, and what lies ahead.
For more information, check out six videos that capture our favorite moments of the President with icons of the Civil Rights Movement.
“The Powerbroker” Screening: A day before the President spoke at the Lincoln Memorial, First Lady Michelle Obama hosted a screening of “The Powerbroker: Whitney Young’s Fight for Civil Rights,” a documentary detailing the life and achievements of the civil rights leader. The First Lady also spoke to a group of students who attended the screening.
The thing I want you all to remember, as you watch this film, is that we are here because of that struggle. I'm here because of that struggle. And even though you may think you have some struggles, your paths are a whole lot easier because of the work these men and women did.
Women’s Equality Day: Tuesday was Women’s Equality Day, which commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment and celebrates advocates like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Ida B. Wells, who devoted their lives to ensuring that women would have a voice in democracy. In advance of Women’s Equality Day, the President visited Seneca Falls, New York during his college affordability bus tour, where the first Women’s Right Convention was held in 1848. President Obama presented the Women’s Rights National Historic Park with a copy of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, the first bill he signed into law, which makes it easier for women to bring forward pay discrimination claims.
Medal of Honor Ceremony: Also on Tuesday, the President presented the Medal of Honor to Army Staff Sgt. Ty M. Carter. Carter was one of 53 Americans stationed at a remote outpost in Afghanistan when it came under attack by more than 300 Taliban fighters. The President recognized Carter’s courage and strength, both on the battlefield and in speaking openly and honestly about his struggle with Post-Traumatic Stress.
ATF Director Sworn-In: Vice President Joe Biden swore-in B. Todd Jones as Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) on Thursday. The Vice President also announced two new executive actions to reduce gun violence, building on the gun violence reduction plan he and the President presented at the beginning of this year.
Appointment of new U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan: On Wednesday, President Obama appointed Ambassador Donald Booth as the new U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan. Ambassador Booth will play a vital role in supporting peace between these two nations. |

Because They Marched
This week, the President hit the road for a College Affordability bus tour in New York and Pennsylvania, conferred the medal of honor for conspicuous gallantry, and reflected on what the Civil Rights Movement has meant for the country on the anniversary of the March on Washington 50 years ago, at the Let Freedom Ring ceremony on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

Subject: Keep marching
|

Hello, everyone --
President Obama was just two years old when Dr. King, along with hundreds of thousands of ordinary folks, inspired the country at the March on Washington. The President is a full generation removed from the heroes who marched across the bridge in Selma, who boycotted the buses in Montgomery, who integrated the lunch counters in Greensboro, but they inspired his commitment to public service.
And if his presidency is a symbol of the progress we've made as a nation, his speech yesterday -- a full half century after the March on Washington -- was an impassioned call to continue building on the work of the civil rights movement.
It was quite a moment. Take a minute to watch the video, then share it with your friends.
We too often forget that when the crowds converged on the National Mall 50 years ago, they were marching for jobs and freedom. The speakers talked about rolling back oppression, but they also demanded equal access to opportunity and a fair shot at economic success.
We have made great progress, but these goals remain just as relevant today as they were in 1963. Every American deserves to feel the pride of a hard-earned paycheck and the opportunity to achieve their dreams, regardless of who they are or where they are born.
As President Obama said, "The arc of the moral universe may bend toward justice, but it doesn't bend on its own. To secure the gains this country has made requires constant vigilance, not complacency."
Watch now:

Thank you -- and here's to our continued progress over the next 50 years.

A Speech You Should Watch
Yesterday, President Barack Obama delivered remarks at the Let Freedom Ring ceremony, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington. He spoke about the progress we've made, and the work that's still ahead:
"We might not face the same dangers of 1963, but the fierce urgency of now remains. We may never duplicate the swelling crowds and dazzling procession of that day so long ago -- no one can match King’s brilliance -- but the same flame that lit the heart of all who are willing to take a first step for justice, I know that flame remains."

A Better Bargain for Responsible, Middle Class Homeowners

A Better Bargain for Students: President Obama hit the road on Thursday for a two-day bus tour in New York and Pennsylvania to share his plan to make college more affordable. The President stressed the importance of ensuring that higher education pays off for students and their families:
“Too many students are facing a choice that they should never have to make: Either they say no to college and pay the price for not getting a degree -- and that's a price that lasts a lifetime -- or you do what it takes to go to college, but then you run the risk that you won’t be able to pay it off because you've got so much debt.”

Join the conversation on making college affordable
Putting higher education within the reach of all those who are willing to work for it is one of the most important economic challenges we face. So President Obama is introducing a new set of ideas to rethink the way in which we pay for college.
On a bus tour to meet with students, he asked people to raise their voices online to discuss why this issue is so important, and the hashtag #MakeCollegeAffordable started trending nationwide.
Each of these voices is an important reminder about why we can't wait to take action.
If you want to join this conversation online, use Twitter or post to Facebook using the hashtag #MakeCollegeAffordable.

Subject: This is personal for me
Reinhold --
Michelle and I wouldn't be in the White House today if it weren't for our college educations.
It wasn't cheap. We didn't finish paying off our student loans until about nine years ago.
That's why it's been a personal mission of mine to make higher education more affordable for more Americans -- and starting today, I'm hitting the road to talk about real reforms to fundamentally rethink how we pay for college in this country.
I'm asking you to speak out as well.
Stand with me today -- tell Congress you support real action to make college more affordable for American families.
Right now, the average student who takes out loans to pay for school graduates with more than $26,000 in debt. Something's got to change -- it's not enough just to tinker around the edges. We've got to shake up the current system.
My plan won't be popular with everybody, especially those who profit from the way things are. But we owe it to our students to make sure that our colleges are working for them.
While we'll need Congress' help to get some of this done, my administration will continue to do what we can to make sure quality, affordable higher education is in reach for millions more young Americans.
So far, we've taken some good steps forward. We've published college scorecards to ensure that families are getting the best information as they pick a school, doubled funding for Pell grants, and established a college tax credit. And thanks to the income-based repayment program, which caps student loan payments based on new graduates' incomes, 1.6 million young Americans can keep more money in their pockets.
But there's much more we can and should do -- this is key to creating a better bargain for the middle class.
That's something I've talked a lot about -- every day, I think about what I can do to live up to it.
That's why I'm calling on Congress to tackle rising tuition costs and pass reforms, so families can get a better bargain when it comes to getting a world-class education.
I'm counting on OFA supporters to be part of this fight. Not much gets done in Washington without the voices of people like you.

Sehr geehrter Herr Professor Kiehl,
Internet gehört heute so selbstverständlich zum Leben wie Wasser und Strom - wenn man es braucht, ist es einfach da. Klassisches Einwählen gerät in Vergessenheit.

Subject: A personal mission

Hello, everybody --
Michelle and I know exactly how tough it can be to pay for higher education. By the time we finished paying back the loans we took out to go to college and grad school, I was on my way to being a U.S. Senator.
I believe that anyone who works hard should have the same opportunities that our educations gave us. That's why, as President, I've made it a personal mission to make higher education more affordable -- and why I'm going to be visiting school campuses later this week.
Learn more about why this is the time to take action.
The facts are clear. Over the past three decades, the average tuition at a public four-year college has more than tripled. At the same time, many state governments are actually reducing their support for education, and many middle-class students are getting stuck with the tab. Today, the average student taking out loans to pay for education graduates with more than $26,000 in debt.
Just tinkering around the edges won't be enough: To create a better bargain for the middle class, we have to fundamentally rethink about how higher education is paid for in this country. We've got to shake up the current system.
That's why, starting Thursday, I will be embarking on a bus tour to offer my plan to make college more affordable, tackle rising costs, and improve value for students and their families. My plan includes real reforms that would bring lasting change. They won't all be popular with everyone --including some who've made higher education their business -- but it's past time that more of our colleges work better for the students they exist to serve.
Over the past four and a half years, we've worked to put college in reach for more students and their families through tax credits, improving access to financial aid, and new options that make it easier to repay those loans.
But if we're going to keep the doors of higher education open to everyone who works for it, we need to do more -- much more. And that's exactly what I'm going to be talking about this week.
So learn more here, then help to spread the word:

Thanks,
President Barack Obama
