Local elected officials and communities dedicated to the First Lady’s Let’s Move! Cities, Towns and Counties (LMCTC) initiative were honored at the National League of Cities (NLC) Congress of Cities and Exposition in Seattle, Washington earlier this month. Through a video message shared at the conference, the First Lady commended these officials for the tremendous work they have done to build stronger, healthier communities across the country. Mrs. Obama also urged all officials who aren’t currently involved to sign up for Let’s Move! Cities, Towns and Counties and work together in order to make our communities more vibrant and give all our children the opportunities they deserve.
Communities can earn bronze, silver, and gold medals in each of the LMCTC initiative’s five goals, which encourage local leaders and officials to foster environments that support healthy eating and physical activity for children in their communities. Nearly 400 mayors, city councilmembers, and other local elected officials were honored for their participation in LMCTC, and 18 communities received awards for their achievements. Since July 2012, NLC has awarded 1,274 medals to participating LMCTC local officials and their communities.

Leaders from the Indian Health Service (IHS) and the Notah Begay III Foundation met at the White House this month to sign a Memorandum of Understanding formalizing a partnership in support of Let’s Move! in Indian Country (LMIC). The two organizations will work together to curb and prevent childhood obesity in American Indian and Alaska Native communities. LMIC, as part of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative, was established to engage tribal leaders and members to provide a healthier environment for children in their communities.
“Today’s partnership is an important step towards helping Native American youth lead healthier lives,” said Sam Kass, Let’s Move! Executive Director. “With LMIC, we’ve seen tribal leaders engage their communities by creating food policy councils and reintroducing sports like lacrosse into schools, but we know there is more work to be done to ensure all our children have the healthy futures they deserve."

Last week, Executive Director of Let’s Move! Sam Kass spoke during the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Scientific Sessions 2013 in Dallas, Texas. During his remarks, Kass highlighted the key goals and progress that First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative has worked toward and achieved over the past four years.
New research presented at the AHA’s Scientific Sessions showed that in the United States, kids’ cardiovascular endurance performance declined approximately six percent per decade between 1970 and 2000. It also reported that around the world, children are about 15 percent less fit than their parents were when they were young. Despite progress that has been made, it is important that we continue to work hard to reverse the trend of inactivity in this country. Kass called on Americans to work toward making physical activity easier and more fun for kids and families.

First Lady Michelle Obama Talks Let’s Move! with the American Public Health Association
As Let’s Move! approaches its fourth year, First Lady Michelle Obama discussed how the initiative is changing the way kids eat and stay active in the American Public Health Association’s (APHA) November edition of their publication, The Nation’s Health. In the Q&A, Mrs. Obama focused on what progress Let’s Move! has already made and discussed how businesses and the public health sector can do their part in supporting healthier kids and families by making the healthy choice the easy choice for families. Additionally, she stressed the importance of collaborative efforts between all sectors of society in working toward the common goal of ensuring kids and families are healthy.
GSA and Let’s Move! Provide Healthy Options for Federal Child Care Centers
By meeting the goals of the Let’s Move! Child Care Challenge, the General Services Administration’s (GSA) Child Care Centers have become leaders in demonstrating how to create a healthy environment for their children. The 106 child care centers have worked to successfully meet the Let’s Move! Child Care checklist, which consists of the following principles: physical activity, limits on screen time, serving healthy food and beverages, and infant feeding options for parents. GSA and all its providers will continue to work to make a stronger community by offering programs similar to those incorporated within their child care centers.

A step towards a working Washington
On Tuesday we told you about a group of Senate Republicans who were holding up confirmations for important executive and judicial nominations. Since he took office, President Obama's executive nominees have faced more filibusters than in the previous 60 years combined -- an unacceptable standard of business.
So yesterday, a majority of senators took a step to overcome this obstruction and made a key change to the way Washington does business: They changed the rules so that nominees (except those to the Supreme Court) can no longer be blocked by a minority of Senators from receiving a simple yes-or-no vote. As a result, it will be much harder for partisan gridlock to prevent qualified nominees from serving their country.
As President Obama said in his statement:
All too often, we've seen a single senator or a handful of senators choose to abuse arcane procedural tactics to unilaterally block bipartisan compromises, or to prevent well-qualified, patriotic Americans from filling critical positions of public service in our system of government.
Take a minute to watch President Obama explain why the Senate's action is important.

Westliche Medien berichten falsch über die „Selbstverbrennung“
auf dem Tiananmen-Platz |
|

Liebe Leserinnen und Leser,
der weltweiten Chemieindustrie stehen turbulente Zeiten bevor. Diesen Schluss zieht die Unternehmensberatung A.T. $ an Verbindlichkeiten zurückzahlen müssen.

Weiter |

Weekly Address: Taking Control of America’s Energy Future
In his weekly address, President Obama discusses progress in American energy and highlights that we are now producing more oil at home than we buy from other countries for the first time in nearly two decades. We reached this milestone in part not only because we’re producing more energy, but because we’re wasting less energy, and as a result, we are also reducing our carbon emissions while growing the economy.

Honoring our Military: On Veterans Day, the President honored those who have served, or are currently serving, our country. The President hosted a breakfast that morning for veterans and their families before heading off to Arlington Cemetery with the Vice President, the First Lady, and Dr. Biden. The President participated in a wreath-laying ceremony and spoke to the crowd about the devotion and commitment of those who don our nation’s uniform.
In the life of our nation, across every generation, there are those who stand apart. They step up, they raise their hands, they take that oath. They put on the uniform and they put their lives on the line. They do this so that the rest of us might live in a country and a world that is safer, freer, and more just.
The President also reminded Americans that we need to support troops after they have come home. “This is how we’ll be judged. Not just by how well we care for our troops in battle, but how we treat them when they come home,” the President said. Check out the President’s remarks here.
In honor of Veteran’s Day, First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden wrote an op-ed about Joining Forces that appeared in military news websites, highlighting their commitment to employment, wellness, and education for veterans, service members, and their families.
Continuing his work with members of the military later that week, the President welcomed senior civilian defense and military leaders to an annual meeting and dinner, where those present discussed a wide range of issues.
Affordable Care Act: President Obama made a statement in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room on Thursday, announcing new steps to help those Americans that are receiving insurance cancellation notices. The President stated that insurers can offer customers who have been notified about canceled plans the option to renew their 2013 plan in 2014.
“It took 100 years for us to even get to the point where we could start talking about and implementing a law to make sure everybody has got health insurance,” the President said. “And my pledge to the American people is, is that we’re going to solve the problems that are there, we’re going to get it right, and the Affordable Care Act is going to work for the American people.”
Manufacturing in Ohio: The President spoke at a steel factory in Cleveland, Ohio on Thursday, highlighting the plant’s comeback after nearly 1,200 steelworkers were furloughed when the auto industry was on the brink of collapse. Today, ArcelorMittal, is the largest supplier of steel in the auto industry and is a global leader in producing advanced high-strength steel for fuel efficient cars. “The story of this plant is the story of America over the last five years,” President Obama said. “We haven’t just been recovering from a crisis. What we’ve been trying to do is rebuild a new foundation for growth and prosperity to protect ourselves from future crises.”
Tribal Nations Conference: On Thursday, the White House hosted the fifth White House Tribal Nationals Conference, which welcomed leaders from all 566 federally recognized tribes. The President spoke to conference attendees, highlighting the need for strengthening justice and tribal sovereignty, expanding opportunities for Native Americans, and protecting tribal lands. Read the President’s full remarks here.
Protecting kids with asthma and allergies: President Obama signed into law the School Access to Emergency Epinephrine Act on Wednesday, which encourages schools to plan for severe asthma attacks and allergic reactions. Approximately 9.5 percent of American children suffer from asthma, and between 4 and 6 percent of children have food allergies. By updating and upgrading school’s response capacity for asthma and food allergies, this law will help relieve the anxiety of millions of parents.
First Lady Talks Education: First Lady Michelle Obama and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan visited Bell Multicultural High School in Washington, D.C. to discuss the importance of youth empowerment and education. The First Lady shared her personal academic experiences to a group of sophomores, telling them that she pushed herself to have a strong academic and extracurricular record. “And when I encountered doubters…when people told me that I wasn’t going to cut it… I didn’t let that stop me," she said.

President Obama Speaks on Manufacturing in Ohio
Yesterday, President Obama spoke at ArcelorMittal's steel factory in Cleveland, Ohio. ArcelorMittal is the largest supplier of steel to the U.S. auto manufacturing sector.
But just a few years ago, President Obama said, the economy was in free fall and the auto industry was on the brink of collapse. That meant demand for steel had dried up. Nearly 1,200 steelworkers were furloughed from the factory.
Shortly after taking office, President Obama stepped in to give the auto industry the temporary helped it needed to start growing again. “We rolled up our sleeves, we made some tough choices,” he said. “We rescued and retooled the American auto industry; it saved more than a million jobs.”

President Obama Announces New Steps to Help Americans Receiving Insurance Cancellation Notices
In the past few weeks, some Americans have been notified by their health insurance companies that plans they bought on the old individual insurance market are being cancelled -- often because these plans no longer meet the Affordable Care Act's requirement to cover basic benefits like prescription drugs or doctors’ visits. Yesterday, President Obama announced that insurers can offer these customers the option to renew their 2013 health plans in 2014, without change, allowing them to keep their plans.

As Let’s Move! approaches its fourth year, First Lady Michelle Obama discussed how the initiative is changing the way kids eat and exercise in the most recent issue of the American Public Health Association’s The Nation’s Health. The Q&A focuses on what progress Let’s Move! has already made as well as how businesses and the public health sector can do their part in supporting healthier kids and families.
“I think that one reason why we’re seeing change happening is that we helped people understand that everyone has a role to play in helping our kids lead healthier lives, and we’ve encouraged everyone to do their part to help,” Mrs. Obama said. “And, so many different people are working together, stepping up to address this epidemic in their communities.”

As part of Let’s Move! Museums and Gardens, Sam Kass, Executive Director of Let’s Move!, visited the Children’s Museum of Manhattan (CMOM) to participate in the launch of EatPlayGrow, a new early childhood education curriculum designed to keep children healthy through creative strategies developed specifically for families with very young children. The curriculum, which was developed by CMOM and approved by the National Institutes of Health, will encourage children to develop lifelong healthy habits and is consistent with national dietary and physical activity guidelines.
