FEBRUARY 2011
Welcome to the Nobelprize.org Monthly, a new version of the newsletter intended to highlight the wealth of material and interesting themes found on Nobelprize.org. This month we feature Chemistry, a science that touches every aspect of our daily lives.
Chemistry Matters!
Nobel Laureates describe the inherent beauty in the 'queen of all sciences', chemistry. In celebration of the International Year of Chemistry 2011, Nobelprize.org has produced short educational videos called 'Chemistry Matters', capturing the tales of a chemist's life and the sometimes lonely, eureka moments of discovery.
What's a Nobel Laureate?
Tracing its origin to Greek mythology, the god Apollo is depicted with a laurel wreath. It is the crowned honor of a laurel wreath that signifies a "laureate". Did you know that:
160 Laureates have received the Chemistry Prize since 1901
4 of them are women
35 years old is the age of the youngest Chemistry Laureate ever, Frédéric Joliot, awarded the Chemistry Prize in 1911
A True Chemistry LoverThe year 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize awarded to Marie Curie, the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Recorded from the 1920s, watch two short documentary clips, among them, a rare moment from Curie's lab.
